Tamil Nadu Government Formation: Vijay’s TVK Crosses Majority Mark With Support From 4 Parties; Alliance Reaches 119 Seats

The political deadlock in Tamil Nadu has finally ended after actor Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured the support required to form the government following the 2026 Assembly elections. Vijay’s path to becoming Chief Minister is now clearer after four parties, including the Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), extended their backing to TVK. Earlier, the Governor had reportedly refused to administer the oath to Vijay despite two meetings regarding government formation, asking him to produce the signatures of 118 MLAs before staking a claim. Amid speculation over possible discussions between rival parties DMK and AIADMK for forming an alliance government, Vijay managed to gather the crucial majority figure.

Tamil Nadu’s 234-member Assembly requires 118 seats for a majority, and the new alliance has crossed that mark with a combined strength of 119 MLAs. TVK has emerged as the single largest force with 108 seats, while the Congress has contributed five MLAs to the coalition. The Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (Marxist), and VCK have each extended support with two MLAs each, taking the tally past the majority line. The development has significantly changed the state’s political equations, ending uncertainty surrounding the formation of the next government. Political observers believe the support from Left parties and VCK could strengthen Vijay’s position as he prepares to formally stake claim to power in the state.

Political activity intensified throughout the day as senior leaders from alliance parties held meetings to finalise support arrangements. Reports suggest that discussions took place at Vijay’s residence in Pattinapakkam, where final negotiations over support were completed. CPI’s executive committee and CPM’s state committee also reportedly approved the decision to back TVK. A joint press conference by all alliance partners is scheduled for 4:30 pm, where the parties are expected to formally announce their support and future strategy. The alliance formation has also helped avoid fears of a fractured mandate leading to “resort politics” and attempts at defections, which were widely anticipated after the election results produced a hung Assembly.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury defended TVK’s claim to power and criticised the Governor’s approach in the matter. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Chowdhury said democratic tradition requires the Governor to first invite the single largest party to form the government. He stated that asking for proof of numbers before extending an invitation was not appropriate for the constitutional office. According to him, TVK deserved the first opportunity because it emerged as the party with the highest number of seats in the Assembly. He further added that if TVK later failed to prove its majority on the floor of the House, it would become a separate issue, but the initial chance should be given to Vijay’s party.
