The crime occurred near the Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College, close to the highly secure offices of both the Central Zone Inspector General of Police and the District Superintendent of Police.

Police report that a local college student was allegedly attacked by her boyfriend, a St Joseph's College graduate from Ramanathapuram working at a Thillai Nagar real estate firm. The incident occurred after the victim invited the suspect to discuss her parents' disapproval of their relationship, which led to a violent argument.
