The three-day celebrations will be held from August 23 to 25 across the state, VHP state unit spokesperson Sourish Mukherjee told .

Janmashtami, one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals, falls on August 24.

"We will organise 'puja' at over 1,500 places. This is more than double the figure last year when the religious rituals were held at 700 locations," said Mukherjee.

As against the 200 processions brought out last year, this time the number would go up to 500.

The focus will be on the villages this time, according to the spokesperson.

"Our functionaries will fan out from village to village. The festival has been organised to unite the Hindu 'samaj' (society) irrespective of economic, political differences.

"This festival is important for the VHP from the viewpoint of expanding and strengthening the organisation and ensuring security of the next generation," said Mukherjee.

The VHP decided to celebrate the occasion in a more high profile manner than the previous years also because of the "prevailing situation in Bengal".

"There is so much of minority appeasemet, and jihadi attacks. We will also highlight the impact of infiltration from across the border," the spokesperson said.

The VHP has drawn up an elaborate programme that includes bringing out processions, organising religious meetings and cultural functions.

"At every venue boys and girls will take part in the festivities dressed like Lord Krishna.A There will be competitions on colouring the lord's picture, devotional songs will be rendered. Well decorated tableaux will also Abe taken out," Mukherjee added.
