On numerous occasions, while traversing the national highway, a common sight unfolds at toll plazas: a multitude of vehicles pass through without remitting the requisite toll tax. Observing this scenario often leads to the presumption that occupants of these vehicles hold VIP status.

Contrary to popular belief, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has not granted toll tax exemptions to VIPs or influential individuals. However, NHAI has implemented toll waivers for specific service sector entities and emergency service providers across the country.

Ambulances and fire brigade vehicles are permitted to traverse national highways without the obligation to pay toll tax, as per the government's exemption policy for these essential emergency services. Consequently, it is unsurprising that these vehicles are frequently observed passing through toll plazas without making toll payments.

The President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Governors, Chief Ministers, Speakers of the Lok Sabha, Chief Justices of the Supreme Court, Chief Justices of High Courts, as well as Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are exempt from paying toll taxes.

Police, army, and paramilitary forces are exempt from toll tax when traveling on national highways, especially while in their official uniforms.

Individuals with disabilities traveling on tricycles and possessing a disability certificate are exempt from paying toll tax. Additionally, certain state governments have implemented toll tax exemptions for farmers.
