West Bengal Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim on Friday criticised the BJP-led government at the Centre for the Aurangabad train accident this morning killing at least 16 migrant workers.

Hakim, who took charge as an administrator of the state's largest civic body Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) today, targeted the Centre and state Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

"The Centre and the Governor sir here are constantly attacking the state government almost on every issue. But they are keeping mum about incidents happening elsewhere in the country. Do they have the guts to criticise those state governments too? I do not think so," he told reporters.

Satirically, Hakim said: "I admit we are the worst. Whatever we do is all bad things. We wish him good health (Governor) as always."

Led by Hakim, the 14-member board of administrators took charge of KMC on Friday as the tenure of the previous civic board ended on May 7. The civic body polls that were scheduled for various urban local bodies (ULBs) in April-May this year were postponed for an indefinite period owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said Trinamool Congress leaders do not know "when to say what and they always believe in blame-game".

"It (the train tragedy) was an unfortunate incident that happened in Aurangabad. No one should play politics over such incidents, especially at this point of time when the whole world is suffering from a deep crisis. Instead of fighting the public health crisis in Bengal, they are busy hitting out at the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre," Ghosh added.
