Tamil Nadu's hung Assembly: DMK slams Congress for "betrayal" after it supports TVK
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 7 : The political landscape of Tamil Nadu has been plunged into volatility following a hung verdict in the recent Assembly elections. In a high-stakes meeting held on Thursday at Anna Arivalayam, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Legislature Party passed a scathing resolution condemning the Congress party for abandoning the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) and supporting Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The meeting, chaired by outgoing Chief Minister and DMK Chief MK Stalin, marked a formal rupture between the long-term allies. The DMK accused Congress of failing to shed its "old political character" and jeopardising a victory built on the hard work of alliance cadres.
The DMK's resolution pulled no punches, characterising the Congress party's recent manoeuvres as a "sudden political shift" and a "betrayal."
DMK leaders pointed out that Congress secured one Rajya Sabha seat and 28 Assembly constituencies (in the previous term/arrangement) due to the DMK's "patience and magnanimity."
The party accused Congress of attempting to form an "alternative front" within days of the results, comparing the move to tactical shifts Congress has allegedly employed in other states.
The DMK maintained that the Congress party's actions are a direct threat to the stability of the state at a time when no single party holds a majority.
The condemnation comes as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, reshaped the state's power dynamics. In a historic breakthrough, the TVK emerged as the single largest party on Monday.
With 108 seats, the TVK is just 10 seats short of the 118 required for a majority. Congress has already extended its support to Vijay's party, a move that triggered the DMK's fury.
PMK has four seats, and CPI, CPI(M), and VCK hold two seats each. These parties may extend support to the Vijay-led party. DMK secured 59 seats, with AIADMK following in third place with 47 seats.
Despite the setback, the DMK remains focused on preventing "anti-Dravidian forces" from gaining a foothold. The Legislature Party passed a resolution granting MK Stalin total autonomy to make immediate political decisions to navigate the crisis.
"Tamil Nadu is not prepared for another election. We need a stable government to ensure the welfare schemes and development programmes of the last five years continue without interruption," read the DMK Resolution.
The meeting concluded with a note of gratitude toward Stalin for his lifelong dedication to the movement, tracing his journey from the age of 14 at the Gopalapuram Youth DMK. However, with the TVK actively courting smaller parties like the PMK, CPI, and VCK, the DMK faces an uphill battle to remain the primary architect of the state's political future.
