WhatsApp Hacking Scam: Know How a Simple Call Forwarding Trick Can Steal Your Account
A new type of WhatsApp fraud has emerged, where scammers use call forwarding tricks to hack accounts and demand money from contacts. A recent case in Bhopal highlights how cybercriminals are executing this scam in a unique way.
How the Scam Works
A woman's WhatsApp account was hacked after she received a call from an unknown number claiming to be a delivery boy. The caller asked her to dial a number starting with , which unknowingly activated call forwarding on her phone. Using this loophole, the hacker registered WhatsApp using her number and took control of her account. The hacker then called the woman's husband from her WhatsApp and urgently requested money. Meanwhile, the woman’s WhatsApp stopped working, and she could not receive any messages or calls.
Police Warning: How Scammers Exploit Call Forwarding
According to Cyber Crime officials, this scam redirects verification calls to the scammer, allowing them to register the victim's WhatsApp on a different device. Once done, they use the account to scam the victim’s contacts.
Another Scam: APK Messenger Forwarder
Another method being used is via phishing links that prompt users to install a third-party app (APK Messenger Forwarder). This malware forwards messages to the scammer’s device, giving them control over the victim’s WhatsApp.
How to Protect Yourself from WhatsApp Hacking
- Never dial numbers starting with # when asked by strangers.
- Do not click on unknown links or install third-party APKs.
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in WhatsApp settings.
- Report hacked accounts immediately to the Cyber Crime Branch and email support@support.whatsapp.com.
- Monitor call forwarding settings in your phone’s settings.
With WhatsApp being a crucial communication tool, users should stay vigilant and take preventive measures to avoid falling victim to these scams.
