Why Is Skype Shutting Down? Microsoft's Video-Calling Platform to Retire on May 5
Skype, once the most popular platform for live audio and video calling between 2005 and 2010—before the rise of WhatsApp and other social media platforms—is set to say goodbye to its users on May 5, 2025. This comes after Microsoft officially announced that its video-calling platform is being retired. Launched in 2003, Skype revolutionised internet communication at a time when smartphones were not widely available. It ruled the online communication space for over two decades. However, due to increasing competition and rapid advancements in communication technology, Skype struggled to keep up.
Why Is Skype Being Retired?
Microsoft explained in an official blog post that Skype will be retired as part of its broader strategy to consolidate its communication platforms and focus on Microsoft Teams. “In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub,” Microsoft said.
Migrating Skype User Data to Microsoft Teams
Microsoft has urged Skype users to shift their data and profiles to Teams. The company is providing a migration window from February to May 2025 and promises full support during the transition. “All the resources and support to help users migrate smoothly” will be made available, ensuring no data loss and minimal disruption.

What Happens to Skype’s Paid Users?
Microsoft has already discontinued the availability of Skype paid services for new users, including Skype Credit and calling plans. Existing subscribers can continue using their active subscriptions and credits until their current billing cycle ends. Any remaining Skype Credit will still be accessible even after the service is shut down. Paid users will also retain access to the Skype Dial Pad, either through the Skype web portal or directly within Microsoft Teams.
Switching to Microsoft Teams
According to Microsoft, the shift from Skype to Teams will be seamless. Users simply need to log in using their existing Skype ID or username. All contacts, messages, and conversations will be automatically transferred to Teams, allowing users to continue their communication without interruption.
“Both platforms have similar features, including one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing,” Microsoft said. “However, Teams also offers enhanced functionality such as calendar integration and community-based tools.”
Is Teams the New Skype?
Microsoft is actively working to make Teams a clean, user-friendly platform for video and audio calling, similar to Skype. With the company now urging all Skype users to move to Microsoft Teams, it’s safe to say: Microsoft Teams is the new Skype.
