Maharashtra: Dombivli–Thane Direct Bus Service To Begin From March 4

In a major development for daily commuters, a dedicated bus service linking Dombivli and Thane in Maharashtra is set to begin operations from March 4, 2026. The initiative aims to ease the growing burden on the suburban railway system, offering residents a safer and more comfortable travel option. With thousands of people depending on overcrowded trains for their short but critical commute, authorities hope this new service will provide significant relief, particularly during peak hours. The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to modernize urban transport and improve passenger safety across the region.

The service is being launched through a collaborative effort between the transport departments of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) and Thane Municipal Transport (TMT). Officials highlighted that the increasing daily flow of commuters between the two towns, especially during morning and evening rush hours, prompted the decision. By providing a structured bus schedule and dedicated routes, the authorities aim to complement the existing railway system. The partnership reflects a growing focus on integrated transport solutions to manage urban congestion while ensuring that public transit remains reliable and accessible.

Currently, suburban trains in this corridor are heavily crowded, with passengers often forced to stand near doorways during rush periods. Such extreme overcrowding has raised serious safety concerns, as incidents of commuters falling from moving trains have reportedly increased in recent months. The risk to daily travellers has become a pressing issue for civic authorities, prompting the search for alternative commuting solutions. The new bus service is seen as a proactive measure to reduce these hazards, ensuring that passengers can travel securely without having to contend with the dangerous crowding conditions on trains.

The newly introduced bus service will initially run with two 40-seater buses, providing four trips in each direction during peak hours for a total of eight daily journeys. Authorities believe this structured schedule will offer a practical alternative for office-goers and regular travellers who face persistent delays and overcrowding. By diverting a portion of commuters from the railway network to road transport, the initiative is expected to not only improve daily convenience but also gradually reduce pressure on suburban trains.
