It is a special freight service operated by Indian Railways. Unlike regular goods trains with open wagons, this one looks similar to a passenger train in structure. However, its purpose is entirely different. The NMG is specifically designed to transport valuable cargo safely from one state to another. Despite its passenger-like appearance, it is not meant for carrying people but for moving high-value goods efficiently across long distances.It Looks Like a Passenger Train but Isn’t OneAt first glance, the NMG train resembles an ordinary passenger train. The coaches are similar in shape and size to standard passenger compartments. However, a closer look reveals that the doors and windows are completely sealed. These trains can run at speeds of up to 75 kilometres per hour. Their design helps them blend in visually with passenger rakes, but internally they are modified to function as secure carriers for automobiles and other valuable items.It Is Made from Old Passenger CoachesThe NMG coaches are created by converting old ICF passenger coaches. Normally, these coaches have a lifespan of around 20 to 25 years, though some are withdrawn from passenger service earlier due to wear and tear. Instead of scrapping them, Indian Railways refurbishes and repurposes these coaches. They are structurally strengthened and redesigned to function as automobile carriers. This innovative reuse not only extends the life of the coaches but also makes the process cost-effective and resource-efficient.It Is Designed to Carry VehiclesThese modified coaches are specially structured to transport cars, mini trucks, and tractors. The interiors are adjusted to allow vehicle loading and secure placement during transit. The train can carry between 200 and 250 cars in a single trip, making it a highly efficient mode of bulk vehicle transportation. Automobile manufacturers and dealers use this service to move vehicles safely across states without relying solely on road transport.Doors and Windows Are Sealed for SecurityOne of the most distinctive features of the NMG train is that all its doors and windows are permanently sealed. After the coaches undergo Periodic Overhauling and inspection, necessary modifications are made to ensure maximum safety. Since the train carries expensive vehicles and valuable cargo, security is a top priority. The journeys between states can take considerable time, and sealing the openings prevents theft, tampering, or unauthorized access. This design ensures that the cargo remains protected throughout the journey.
