It was only a few days ago that Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, ‘King of Indian Spices’ and the owner of business empire MDH Spices, passed away at Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Delhi on Thursday morning, following cardiac arrest. He was 97. Born in Pakistan’s Sialkot, his family moved to Delhi after the Partition. In 1953, he rented a small shop for spices and named it Mahashian Di Hatti (MDH) at Chandi Chowk, carrying forward his paternal business.From then on, it has been an upward climb, and today almost every kitchen in India stocks up on MDH masalas. Now after his death a video of MDH owner has now gone viral on social media. . A person standing near them is singing the song 'Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada' and people standing around are clapping to the beat of the song. Dharampal is also seen completely immersed in the patriotic song. Mahashay Dharampalji had fallen down, so I had gone to meet him in the hospital and that’s when I sang a song for him. We have close family relations with him. He had asked me to sing this song and even the doctors said that we have to make him energetic.” He further confirmed that the video was taken in Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in New Delhi. The Hospital administration department has also confirmed that the video is old. While the exact date of the video is not confirmed since according to Ahuja ‘Mahashay’ Dharampal was admitted at the hospital several times, it does not show his last moments.
