A staggering three lakh coconuts will be offered into the Holika Dahan fire this year, continuing a generations-old tradition that has intrigued many. Unlike the usual practice of breaking coconuts at temples, devotees here believe that burning them in the sacred fire purges negativity and brings prosperity. With Holi still 13 days away, coconut sales have surged across markets, and traders predict a record-breaking demand.

Why are coconuts burned in Holika dahan?

Devotees believe that offering coconuts in the fire eliminates household troubles and negative energies. This faith has kept the practice alive, drawing thousands to participate in the ritual on the night of Holi.

Where do the coconuts come from?

The district receives its coconut supply primarily from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Specifically for Holi, around eight truckloads of coconuts have arrived, with an estimated sale of over 3 lakh coconuts for the occasion.

Record sales during pola festival

While Holi sees a massive coconut demand, the highest sales occur during the Pola festival, with 15 to 20 lakh coconuts sold across the district. April's Chaitra month, marked by Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti, also witnesses a spike, with 8 to 10 lakh coconuts sold at village fairs, according to wholesale traders. As Holi approaches, the tradition continues to fuel the market, turning coconuts into an unexpected festive highlight.
