Constituency-wise mapping of voter lists gathers pace in district

The process of constituency-wise ‘mapping’ of electors lists has begun in the district. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is likely to commence by the end of this month. In preparation, the election department has undertaken the task of matching the current voter list with the one from 2002.

Progeny mapping of the 2002 list is also being carried out. In cases where a person’s name did not appear in the 2002 list, it is being matched with relatives’ names, such as those of parents. Names of married women are being verified against voter lists from their previous place of residence. The Election Commission has directed that this mapping be completed in advance.

After 24 years, a revision (SIR) of the voter list, containing 32.66 lakh registered voters in the district, is set to begin by the end of the month. The programme is expected to continue for around three months. During this period, enumeration forms (EF) will be distributed to every voter through Booth Level Officers (BLOs). Voters will be required to affix their photograph on the form, which will include a QR code. The submitted information will be verified and approved by the electoral registration officer (ERO).

What if a voter’s name is not found?

If a person’s name is missing from the list, they will have to appear before the tehsildar (ERO) for re-registration with one of 16 types of supporting documents. Currently, BLOs are conducting the mapping through the Election Commission’s app. The SIR exercise has not yet formally begun. Once announced, BLOs will visit every household to distribute and collect the filled enumeration forms (EF), following which voter verification will be carried out.

25,000 voters mapped daily

Out of 32.66 lakh voters in the district, 19.36 lakh have been mapped so far. On average, 25,242 voters are being mapped daily. About 59 per cent of voters have been covered, and the process is expected to be completed within the next month. A total of 3,264 BLOs are currently engaged in this work. Political parties have not yet appointed booth level agents (BLAs).
