The Aurangabad bench of the Bombay high court directed to take action against the suppliers, buyers, sellers and flyers of nylon manja (kite strings) on Friday. The bench comprising of Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Vibha Kankanwadi on Friday directed the superintendents of police of 12 districts under its jurisdiction be made defendants, file a district-wise report on the action taken by the district collector, SP and municipal commissioner against nylon manja and also file a report on the cases registered between January 1 and 4 on January 5.
The bench has also directed the concerned authorities to take action against concerned officials if it is found that the nylon manja caused more accidents. A report was submitted to the bench that 8 cases were registered against the owner selling such type of threads within the limits of the commissionerate, and manja worth Rs 13,830 was confiscated. The next hearing of the Sumoto petition is scheduled for Tuesday. A woman scooter rider was killed due to nylon manja in Nashik and a student in Nagpur was seriously injured by the manja. Following the media reports, the bench had on December 30 passed an order converting news reports, as suo motu public interest litigation (PIL). The bench had asked the authorities what action was taken against those who sell and use such manja. The court also asked about the number of stockists that were raided and how many cases were filed. It was also asked whether an action is being taken as per the order issued by the National Green Tribunal. Government pleader Dnyaneshwar Kale, representing the police authorities, told the court that action was taken against eight persons in the city. Adv Satyajit Bora oversaw the work as amicus curiae.
