Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

Under the new water supply scheme, on Thursday, officials from the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) and the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) jointly inspected the jackwell (submersible well) at Jayakwadi. During the inspection, Commissioner G Sreekant instructed that all silt in the jackwell be removed and preparations made to channel water to Nakshatrawadi by February 22.

A new water supply scheme is being implemented to meet the city’s water needs at a cost of ₹2,740 crore. The progress of the project is reviewed monthly by the court. On Wednesday afternoon, during court proceedings, separate statements were submitted by the municipal corporation, MJP, and the GVPR company executing the project. As a result, the court ordered that municipal corporation and MJP officials conduct a joint inspection of the jackwell and other works critical to the project and submit a report.

Following the court’s order, on Thursday morning, municipal commissioner G Sreekanth, MJP chief engineer Manisha Palande, executive engineer Vasant Bhoye, GVPR company officials, and PMC officials inspected the jackwell constructed at the Jayakwadi Dam. It was observed that a large quantity of silt had accumulated in the jackwell. Officials directed that the jackwell be completely cleaned within the next three to four days. They also inspected the 3,700-horsepower motors installed for water pumping and the water channels to transport water to the hills at Nakshatrawadi. Sources reported that the municipal corporation and MJP officials will submit the joint inspection report to the court soon.

As per the process, the water lifted through jackwell will be transported to the treatment plant in Nakshatrawadi and then stored in a master balancing reservoir (MBR) before releasing into elevated storage reservoirs (ESRs).

Earlier, during a hearing on a public interest litigation (PIL) on Wednesday, the company GVPR through senior legal expert Adv R N Dhorde, in front of the Aurangabad Bench of Bombay High Court comprising Justice Ravindra Ghughe and Justice Abhay Mantri, claimed that CSMC can release the water. Hence CSMC lawyer Adv Sambhaji Tope mentioned that so far only 6 ESRs have been handed over to CSMC, therefore, the distribution of water is impossible. Hence GVPR claimed that it would complete the constructions of 26 ESRs by March 15. Hence after hearing oral statements of both the parties, the High Court ordered the delegation to conduct an inspection on Thursday and submit the report of the same to the court.
