Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
The election for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor will be held tomorrow (February 10) at 11 am. The municipal corporation administration has completed all preparations for the process. Presiding officer and district collector Deelip Swami visited the municipal corporation headquarters on Monday morning and reviewed the arrangements.
The BJP has 57 corporators and the Shinde Sena has 13. As the Mahayuti alliance enjoys a majority, it is considered almost certain that BJP’s Sameer Rajurkar will be elected mayor and Shinde Sena’s Rajendra Janjal will be elected deputy mayor.
On Monday morning, district collector Deelip Swami arrived at the CSMC and inspected the assembly hall. He reviewed the seating arrangements and other facilities. He then held a meeting in the standing committee hall to take stock of the preparations for the election process.
The election proceedings will begin at 11 am on Tuesday. The presiding officer will scrutinise the nomination forms. A 15-minute window will be provided for withdrawal of nominations. The names of the candidates will be announced in Marathi alphabetical order. When a candidate’s name is called out, the corporators present may vote by raising their hands in support. These votes will be recorded in the minutes. Corporators who do not vote will also be recorded.
Majority for the first time
The first municipal corporation election was held in 1988. Six elections were conducted up to 2015, but in none of them did any party secure a clear majority. In the 2026 election, for the first time, voters brought the BJP close to a majority. The BJP has nominated Sameer Rajurkar for the post of mayor, while the Shinde Sena has nominated Rajendra Janjal for deputy mayor. Together, the BJP and Shinde Sena have a total of 70 votes.
Candidates from the AIMIM
The AIMIM has nominated Ashok Hiwrale, a former municipal sanitation worker, for the post of mayor. For the post of deputy mayor, the party has nominated Wasim Ahmed. The AIMIM has 33 votes in the municipal corporation.
