MSEDCL’s forced prepaid smart meters spark outrage in Undangaon

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

Widespread discontent has erupted in Undangaon as MSEDCL forcefully replaces functional electricity meters with prepaid smart meters. Consumers, caught off guard by the aggressive installation drive, are confronting employees and questioning the necessity of this move.

MSEDCL had initially planned to implement prepaid smart meters across Maharashtra before the state assembly elections. However, intense opposition forced the state government to halt the initiative nine months ago to prevent electoral backlash. Now, three months after the elections, the company has resumed the installations without seeking consumer consent. Many residents argue that their existing meters were in perfect working condition, yet MSEDCL’s employees insist they are faulty and must be replaced.

Rs 12,000 penalty threat angers consumers

Adding to consumer frustration, MSEDCL employees have allegedly warned that delaying the installation could lead to a penalty of Rs 12,000. So far, around 200 prepaid smart meters have been installed in Undangaon, triggering a wave of protests. Residents are demanding an immediate halt to what they call an unjust imposition.

Local leaders condemn forced installation

Angered by the situation, Undangaon’s Gram Panchayat has formally objected to MSEDCL’s actions. Villagers claim employees are providing vague explanations and, in some cases, resorting to intimidation. The local governing body has submitted a written complaint, urging authorities to stop the coercive rollout.

“MSEDCL must stop this coercion immediately. If not, we will be forced to fight in our own way.”

— Laxman Patil, Sarpanch Undangaon
