Proposal submitted to increase 50 UG and 85 PG seats at GMCH

The Secretary of the Department of Medical Education has instructed officials to submit a proposal to increase 50 undergraduate (MBBS) seats and 85 postgraduate (MD/MS) seats across 11 subjects at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday . To support this expansion, a fund of Rs 202.5 crore is expected to be allocated for manpower, equipment, and infrastructure development.

The Secretary of the Department of Medical Education, along with the Commissioner and Director of DMER, held an online meeting with the deans of Government Medical Colleges in the state on Wednesday. The meeting reviewed each college’s capacity to add seats and the requirements for the same. Detailed proposals are to be submitted to the Department of Medical Education.

For the 50 MBBS seats at GMCH, a total of Rs 75 crore has been estimated at Rs 1.5 crore per seat. For the 85 postgraduate seats across 11 subjects, an estimated Rs 127.5 crore will be required at Rs 1.5 crore per seat.

Seats expected to increase from next academic year

With 50 undergraduate and 85 postgraduate seats proposed to be added, more students are expected to get opportunities. The state government has instructed proposals to be submitted by January 27, and the increase is likely to take effect in the next academic year, following approval from the central government, said dean of GMCH Dr Shivaji Sukre.
