An agent was crushed to death by a truck that had arrived for a fitness test at the Automated Testing Station (ATS) at the RTO premises in Karodi on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns over safety and unrestricted entry at the facility.
The ATS, also known as the Inspection and Certification (I&C) centre, began operations in February, where vehicle fitness is checked through a computerised and automated system under the supervision of motor vehicle inspectors. Though agents were supposed to be barred, people reportedly enter the premises easily, indicating poor security arrangements.
The accident occurred while the truck was being parked for inspection. Following the incident, ATS manager Manohar Devre and the motor vehicle inspector filed a complaint. Devre said efforts are underway to restrict entry and ensure only vehicle owners coming for fitness tests are allowed inside.
Regional transport officer Vijay Kathole said the ATS management has been instructed to take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents in future.
