The Zilla Parishad’s Agriculture Department approved 308 wells under two key schemes for scheduled tribe, scheduled caste and neo-buddhist farmers. However, despite receiving technical and administrative clearance, many beneficiaries have yet to start digging, citing financial hurdles.
Under the Birsa Munda Krishi Kranti Yojana, small landholding Scheduled Tribe farmers receive Rs 4 lakh per well, while Scheduled Caste and Neo-Buddhist farmers get the same amount under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Krishi Swavalamban Yojana. The Mahayuti government not only sanctioned the grants but also removed restrictions such as the mandatory 12-meter depth and a 500-foot distance between two irrigation wells. The move prompted a surge in applications, leading to the approval of 25 wells under the Krishi Kranti Yojana and 283 wells under the Krishi Swavalamban Yojana for the 2024-25 financial year.
Farmers obtained groundwater availability certificates from the relevant department, fulfilling all necessary conditions. However, digging has stalled for many due to lack of upfront funds. Without immediate financial support, beneficiaries struggle to hire excavation machinery and labor.
