The 2024 T20 World Cup match between India and the USA in New York witnessed a significant turning point just before the start of the 16th over when India was awarded five penalty runs against the USA.

This decision came as a result of the USA's third instance of exceeding the 60-second limit to start a new over, as per a new rule trial introduced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during their board meeting late last year.

The rule, implemented on a trial basis in men's ODI and T20I cricket from December 2023 to April 2024, states that a stop clock will regulate the time taken between overs. If the bowling team fails to commence the next over within 60 seconds of the previous one's completion, a 5-run penalty is imposed upon the third violation in an innings.

The penalty was a critical blow to the USA's efforts, as it occurred just as they were applying pressure on India, making the chase for India a run-a-ball scenario with only 30 runs needed off 30 deliveries. The decision was met with disappointment from USA skipper Aaron Jones and the team.

Despite the setback, India managed to chase down the target successfully, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten 50 off 49 balls and Shivam Dube's 31 not out off 35 deliveries. Their efforts ensured India's third consecutive victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, making them the first team from Group A to qualify for the Super 8.
