Waikhom Suraj Lata Devi, former Indian women's hockey captain has filed a police complaint alleging domestic violence, physical assault, and mental torture. At a press conerence, the former hockey player said she was subjected to harassment by her husband since 2005. She also revealed that she was harassed for dowry. Under her captaincy the Indian women's hockey team to win three gold medals in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, an event that inspired making of Bollywood film "Chak De! India", the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, and the 2004 Hockey Asia Cup. 

Lata Devi a mother of two, was accusedby  her husband of having won the Arjuna Award because of her immoral behaviour.Lata decided to file a complaint after she was physically assaulted at Kapurthala in Punjab while she was officiating at a tournament, organised by the Rail Coach Factory in Sultanpur Lodhi. Lata also alleged that she was ridiculed many times for her sport achievements. The Sultanpur Lodhi Sarwan Singh said the Sultanpur Police had registered an FIR after the complaint was filed by the former hockey player. Accordingly, her husband was booked under various sections of the IPC, including Sec 498 - A.
