Middle East Crisis: Saudi Arabia-Pakistan to Take Joint Military Action Against Iran Attacks in KSA?

Israel and the United States launched attacks on Iran last Saturday (February 28), after which Iran began targeting US military bases and other locations in the Middle East region, including recent attacks on Prince Sultan Air Base in Riyadh. Israel has also been facing repeated missile attacks from Tehran in parts of the capital city, Tel Aviv.

Amid the escalating crisis in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman held a conversation with Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Asim Munir, to discuss Iran’s drone and missile attacks by Iran. Following the discussion, concerns have emerged that Saudi Arabia may be considering joint military action against Iran with Pakistan.

Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman wrote on X on Saturday (March 7), “Met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir. We discussed Iranian attacks on the Kingdom and the measures needed to halt them within the framework of our Joint Strategic Defense Agreement.”

He further added, “We stressed that such actions undermine regional security and stability and expressed hope that the Iranian side will exercise wisdom and avoid miscalculation.”

Last year, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a security agreement under which an attack on either country would be considered an attack on both. Under the agreement, both nations are expected to respond jointly to such a threat.

Following Iran’s attacks on US bases in Saudi Arabia, discussions were held within the framework of this agreement between Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister and Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir. This has raised speculation that if Iran does not halt its drone and missile attacks near Saudi territory, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan could consider joint military action.

However, Iran has maintained that it does not intend to harm any neighbouring country, including Saudi Arabia. Tehran says its attacks are aimed only at US military bases located in the region.
