When Is First Day of Ramadan 2026 in Saudi Arabia? Moon Sighting on This Date in Middle East

The International Astronomy Center (IAC) has released its scientific projections for the start of Ramadan 1447 AH, suggesting that most Middle Eastern and Islamic nations are likely to begin the holy month on Thursday, February 19. While the traditional moonsighting will take place on Tuesday, February 17, astronomical data indicates that the crescent will be invisible on that evening.

Science of Sighting Crescent Moon

According to the IAC, observing the crescent moon on the evening of February 17 will be impossible across the Arab and Islamic world, whether by naked eye, telescope, or advanced digital imaging. Several astronomical factors contribute to this lack of visibility:

Eastern Regions: In the eastern parts of the Islamic world, the moon is expected to set before the sun, making any sighting physically impossible.

Central Regions: In central areas, the moon and sun are projected to set simultaneously.

Western Regions: In the west, the moon will set only a few minutes after the sun. Experts explain that this brief window is insufficient for the moon to transition into a visible crescent phase.

Key Calendar Dates

Based on these scientific findings, the expected timeline for the transition into the holy month is as follows:

Tuesday, February 17: Official sighting day (visibility impossible).

Wednesday, February 18: Projected to be the 30th and final day of the month of Sha'ban 2026.

Thursday, February 19: Predicted first day of Ramadan 1447 AH.

Despite the scientific consensus, the final decision rests with national religious authorities. In Saudi Arabia, the Supreme Court will convene on Tuesday evening to receive reports from witnesses and official sighting committees across the Kingdom.
