Gudi Padwa 2026: Shubh Muhurat, Puja Vidhi, and Step-by-Step Process to Make Traditional Gudi for Marathi New Year
According to Hindu scriptures, erecting a Gudi is not merely a cultural ritual but a powerful symbol of victory and prosperity. Gudi Padwa, observed on the first day of the Chaitra month (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada), marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. This day is considered highly auspicious, and starting new ventures on this occasion is believed to bring success and good fortune. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Maharashtra, where households display Gudis outside their homes. Colorful processions and cultural events are also organized. People wake up early, take a ritual bath, and perform prayers. It is also regarded as one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar.
1. Know the Date and Significance of Gudi Padwa 2026
This year, the festival will be celebrated on Thursday, March 19, 2026, marking the beginning of the Marathi New Year. Many newly married women or those living away from their families may not know the traditional way of setting up a Gudi. Understanding the correct method, timing, and importance of this ritual helps preserve its spiritual value. Following the proper steps ensures that the tradition is performed accurately while maintaining its cultural essence. Learning about the festival also deepens one’s connection with heritage and allows individuals to celebrate the occasion with devotion and enthusiasm.
2. Check the Tithi and Timings/Shubh Muhurat
The Pratipada Tithi of the Chaitra month will begin at 6:55 AM on March 19, 2026, and will continue until 4:50 AM on March 20, 2026. Based on the sunrise timing, the festival will be observed on March 19. The auspicious puja muhurat is from 6:44 AM to 8:14 AM. The Abhijit Muhurat will be from 12:04 PM to 12:53 PM, the Labh Muhurat from 12:46 PM to 2:17 PM, and the Amrit Muhurat from 2:17 PM to 3:49 PM. The ideal time to take down the Gudi is between 5:18 PM and 6:49 PM in the evening, ensuring proper ritual completion.
3. Complete the Pre-Preparation Rituals
Before setting up the Gudi, proper preparations are essential. It is recommended to erect the Gudi immediately after sunrise, preferably after taking a ritual bath during Brahma Muhurat. The Gudi should be placed at the entrance of the house or near a window, at a height where it is visible from outside. Clean the area thoroughly and decorate it with rangoli to create a festive atmosphere. These preparations help maintain purity and positivity, ensuring that the ritual is conducted in a spiritually uplifting environment.
4. Gather the Required Materials
To prepare the Gudi, you will need a medium-sized bamboo stick, a new silk cloth (preferably yellow, red, or zari-bordered), sugar garlands, neem leaves, mango leaves, and a garland of marigold flowers. Additionally, a copper or silver pot (kalash) is required to place at the top. Each of these elements holds symbolic significance, representing prosperity, health, and victory. Ensuring that all materials are clean and properly arranged before beginning the ritual makes the process smooth and meaningful.
5. Assemble the Gudi Step-by-Step
Start by cleaning the bamboo stick thoroughly. Tie the silk cloth to the top of the stick neatly. Then attach sugar garlands, neem leaves, and mango leaves along with the cloth. Decorate it further with a marigold flower garland. Finally, place an inverted copper or silver pot at the top and draw a swastika symbol on it using kumkum. Make sure all items are securely tied so that the Gudi stands firm and looks well-arranged.
6. Perform Gudi Padwa Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Rituals)
Begin the puja by placing the erected Gudi on a clean wooden stool decorated with rangoli. Apply turmeric, kumkum, and sandalwood paste to the Gudi and offer flowers. Light a lamp and incense sticks to begin the ritual. Offer a mixture of neem leaves and jaggery as prasad, symbolizing the balance of sweet and bitter experiences in life. You can also offer fruits and traditional sweets. Perform aarti with devotion while praying for prosperity, health, and happiness. Chanting prayers or expressing gratitude is also considered auspicious and spiritually fulfilling.
7. Install and Complete the Ritual Properly
After completing the puja, ensure the Gudi remains upright and visible throughout the day as a symbol of positivity and victory. Family members should gather to seek blessings and celebrate together. In the evening, the Gudi should be respectfully taken down during the auspicious time between 5:18 PM and 6:49 PM. The prasad is then distributed among family members. Following these steps properly helps in welcoming the New Year with happiness, prosperity, and positive energy.
