LPG Gas Cylinder Shortage in Maharashtra? CM Fadnavis Reacts to Reports Amid Middle East Crisis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday, March 7, said news reports on the potential shortage of LPG cylinders amid the Middle East crisis are speculative and not in the interest of the country. He appealed to the media to refrain from speculative reporting, stressing that the Centre is looking into the situation.

Responding to a query regarding news reports about the potential shortage of LPG cylinders, Fadnavis appealed to the media not to create panic or fear among the citizens without any reason.

Meanwhile, India has invoked emergency powers and directed refiners to maximise production of LPG to prevent a shortage of the cooking gas. India was the world's second biggest importer of LPG in 2025. The country consumed over 33 million metric tons of cooking gas.

All oil refiners are asked to "maximise and ensure that propane and ‌butane available with them are utilized for production of LPG", the order issued late on Thursday showed. The Centre asked producers of LPG to make it available to refiners such as Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum Corp and Bharat Petroleum Corp for distribution to households.

However, the government rose the prices of domestic and commercial LPG gas cylinders from today, March 7, as rising global energy costs linked to the ongoing tensions in West Asia continue to impact fuel markets.

The hike marks the second revision in less than a year. Officials from the oil industry told PTI that the price adjustment follows a sharp surge in international energy rates after the military confrontation involving the United States and Israel against Iran intensified in West Asia. The increase has pushed up household and business fuel expenses across the country, reflecting the pressure global geopolitical developments are placing on India’s domestic energy pricing system.

Non-subsidised LPG cylinders used by regular households will now cost Rs 913 for a 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi, compared to the earlier price of Rs 853, according to data published on the website of Indian Oil Corporation. This marks the second price rise in about 11 months, with the previous hike of Rs 50 implemented in April last year. LPG rates differ from state to state due to variations in local taxes such as Value Added Tax (VAT). Under the revised pricing, consumers will pay Rs 913 in Delhi, Rs 912.50 in Mumbai, Rs 939 in Kolkata and Rs 928.50 in Chennai for a 14.2-kg cooking gas cylinder.
