Maharashtra Weather Update: Rainfall In Navi Mumbai, Panvel; Yellow Alert For Mumbai for Next Few Hours

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, April 21, has issued a nowcast warning at 7 am for the next 3 hours, expecting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, very likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai.

Earlier on Monday, IMD's forecast suggested light rain with thundershowers in the city and its suburbs today. However, early morning showers in nearby districts, including Navi Mumbai and Raigad.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert in the Raigad district as thunderstorms accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (30-40kmph) at isolated places are expected today.

Morning Rain Brings Relief From Heat In Panvel and Navi Mumbai

Panvel and parts of Navi Mumbai have been experiencing intense heat over the past few days. On Tuesday morning, a sudden spell of rain brought some relief to residents. Earlier, cloudy and humid conditions had indicated the possibility of rain, after dark cloudy skies at around 8 am, showers began across Panvel and other parts of Navi Mumbai. The unseasonal rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The sudden downpour led to temporary disruption at railway stations, on major roads, and in markets and public squares. Two-wheeler riders were particularly affected, with many taking shelter under trees and at bus stops. Traffic movement slowed for some time due to the rain.

The accompanying cool breeze helped ease the heat, but several commuters, including office-goers and school students, were caught in the rain. While many struggled with the sudden change in weather, some children were seen enjoying the showers. Minor waterlogging was also reported in a few areas.

The Meteorological Department had earlier forecast a mix of heatwave conditions and rainfall in different parts of the region. Officials have indicated that similar weather patterns may continue over the next two to three days, with light to moderate showers expected.

According to the five-day forecast issued by the IMD on April 20, 2026, there is a possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and rain in various parts of the state between April 20 and 24.

Following this forecast, authorities in Mumbai have also issued an alert. Over the next three hours, light rain or showers accompanied by light winds are likely in parts of Mumbai, its suburbs, Palghar, Raigad and Thane. There is also a possibility of thunder and lightning.
