Incessant torrential rains played havoc with normal life in western and coastal Maharashtra since the past 24 hours, disrupting normal life even as rescue teams were deployed to shift thousands marooned in different towns, officials said here on Thursday.

Modak-Sagar & Tansa lakes, which supply water to Mumbai, started overflowing early morning today. Two gates of Modak-Sagar lake & one gate of Tansa lake have been opened due to heavy rainfall. Out of 7 lakes supplying water to Mumbai, 4 lakes have started flowing completely this rainy season, said a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official. The catchment areas of the dam received good rainfall in the last few days.

There are total seven dams- Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna that supplies potable water to Mumbai.

Mumbai has been receiving heavy rains since a few days. India Meteorological Department (IMD) states that the city and suburbs might witness moderate to heavy rainfall/thundershowers. Spells of heavy rainfall are expected at some isolated places.

Several parts of Mumbai were waterlogged on Thursday morning as the heavy rainfall continued overnight in the city.
