Nagpur Violence: Police Impose Prohibitory Orders, Over 20 Detained After Stone Pelting, Arson (Watch Video)

Nagpur, Maharashtra (March 17, 2025): Nagpur Police have issued prohibitory orders in the city after violent clashes broke out in the Mahal area on Monday night following a dispute between two groups. The violence resulted in stone pelting, vandalism, and several vehicles being set on fire. Police have detained more than 20 individuals in connection with the incident.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and other available video clips to identify the culprits. An FIR is currently being processed. Police have also appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperate in upholding law and order in the city.  Section 144 has been imposed in Nagpur, prohibiting the assembly of more than four people in certain areas. Police continue to monitor the situation closely.

Earlier in the day, a protest organized by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal at Shivaji Statue Square called for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. Demonstrators burned an effigy of the Mughal emperor and tore posters, leading to heightened tensions in the Mahal area. These tensions later escalated into clashes between two groups in the evening.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed for peace and urged residents to cooperate with the authorities. "The manner in which the situation became tense in Mahal area of Nagpur is highly condemnable. A few people pelted stones, even at the Police. This is wrong. I am keeping an eye on the situation. I have told the Police Commissioner to take whatever strict steps are necessary to maintain law and order. If someone riots or pelts stones at Police or creates tensions in society, strict action should be taken against all such people. I appeal to everyone to behave to ensure that the peace of Nagpur is not disturbed. If someone attempts to create tension, very strict action will be taken against them," Maharashtra CM said.
