Hijaab Is Our Dignity Showing We Are Muslims, Says Shiv Sena UBT Corporator Saba Khan

Newly elected Shiv Sena UBT corporator Saba Haroon Khan said wearing hijab is a dignity of Muslims. Speaking to the news agency ANI, she stated that other community people, like North Indians too cover their faces with a dupatta.

"This is our dignity showing we are Muslims. Not only us, but people of other castes cover their heads as well," BMC corporator Saba Haroon Khan won Ward No. 64 Versova in Andheri. Saba is the daughter of Sena UBT MLA Haroon Khan.

MLA Haroon Khan backed her daughter's statement, saying she always wears hijab,b and the people who voted for her also do not have a problem with her wearing hijab. "She has always been in hijab, even through the elections, but nobody had an issue... Such issues should not be raised," he added.

Asking who will be the Mayor of Mumbai, whether Muslim, Marathi or Hindu, Saba said now, whether he is Khan, Hindu or Muslim, I am still saying, humanity matters. "A mayor with humanity should be there."

When asked will you become a Mumbai Mayor if you get a chance, or a Muslim woman become Mayor?, she said, "God willing, why not? If there is talent, if there is skill, if there is someone who understands people, then why can't she become a mayor?"

"I can proudly say that I am a Shiv Sainik.  Since years, since child, I have seen my father, how he is loyal through Shiv Sena. That doesn't mean that I am a Muslim. There is nothing like that. We have to look at one side, how we carry it."

Who is Saba Haroon Khan?

Saba Haroon Khan is an active leader of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). She won from Ward No. 64 in the 2026 Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. She is the daughter of Haroon Khan, the sitting MLA from the Versova Assembly constituency. Haroon Khan became the first Muslim MLA elected from the Shiv Sena (UBT) in the last 25 years. Following in her father’s footsteps, Saba Haroon Khan has now made her mark in local politics.

Saba Haroon Khan, daughter of Thackeray faction MLA Haroon Khan from Versova, won Ward No. 64 by a margin of 3,768 votes. She defeated BJP candidate Sarita Rajpure, who secured 6,406 votes. Haroon Khan is a staunch Shiv Sainik and had served as a branch head for several years before becoming an MLA.

The results of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2026, which have drawn attention across the country, were announced on Friday, January 16. In the polls, the alliance of the BJP and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) secured a clear majority with 118 seats.

Following the results, intense competition has begun between the two allies over the mayor’s post. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) has kept all its newly elected corporators at a five-star hotel in Mumbai's Bandra. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have asserted that the mayor of Mumbai will be from the grand alliance.
