MMRDA Set to Energise Mumbai Metro Line 2B Phase 1 from April 8, Marks Key Milestone for City’s Transit

Beginning from April 8, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority  (MMRDA) will energise a 5.6-kilometer section of Metro Line 2B between Mandale and Diamond Garden. This implies that overhead equipment (OHE), the network of cables above the metro tracks that supplies energy to the trains, will get electricity. The 23.6-kilometer elevated corridor will now be accessible in sections. TOI, citing an official of MMRDA, reported that the first train has already been rolled out after the MMRDA finished energising the overhead electric lines at the test track at the Mandale depot. Starting trial runs and getting ready for full operations is a crucial stage. They intend to make the Mandale to Diamond Garden section operational before the end of the year.

Through Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur, Metro Line 2B will connect Mandale in the east with D N Nagar in the west. Together with Line 2A, it is a component of the larger Metro Line 2. At least 10 lakh passengers would be served daily by the metro line once it is operational, greatly reducing traffic. For this line, the MMRDA is taking a phased approach, giving priority to the Mandale to Diamond Garden portion. Like previous Metro lines in Mumbai, the route would be powered by a 25kV AC overhead electric system.

In Line 2B, the Mandale depot is essential. It is being constructed at Mandale, Mankhurd, on a 31.4-hectare government-owned property. The depot can accommodate up to 72 Metro trains and has a double-decker construction to maximise capacity.

The remaining portion of Line 2B, which runs from Diamond Garden to D N Nagar, is still in various phases of development; whether it is finished will depend on upcoming funding and clearances.

The construction of Mumbai Metro Line 2B is not proceeding as planned. The project's completion has been greatly delayed due to the carelessness of the contractors. Two contractors were fined Rs 1.29 crore by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for their carelessness in constructing the Metro-2B corridor from Andheri West, DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd. The project's contractors are J. Kumar and NCC Limited. Despite being instructed to speed up the job, neither of them did.
