Mumbai: BMC Partially Demolishes 87-Year-Old Woman’s Vidyavihar Home During Flyover Work

An upsetting incident in Mumbai’s Vidyavihar has triggered outrage after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allegedly carried out a partial demolition of the home of 87-year-old Catherine Gomes during what was said to be repair-related work. According to a report shared by Mumbai News on X, the civic action took place at Gomes’ residence in Vidyavihar Gaothan. Authorities had earlier issued a notice to the family regarding construction activity linked to a proposed flyover project in the area. While the family did not consent to handing over the property for complete demolition, they had reportedly allowed officials to conduct certain repair works on the structure.

Reports stated that the civic body later initiated demolition activity after the time period granted for the repair work came to an end. During the operation, parts of the residence, including the balcony section, were pulled down. Sources indicated that the original plan involved only limited removal of specific portions of the structure. However, the course of action was allegedly revised later because of concerns connected to access and operational safety. As a result, a much larger area of the house was affected than what had initially been anticipated. The development reportedly caused severe emotional distress to Gomes, who witnessed portions of her residence being dismantled in front of her eyes.

According to Mumbai News, the elderly woman remained inside the house during the operation and observed workers demolishing parts of the property while standing in her kitchen. The situation reportedly left her traumatised and emotionally shaken. The incident has since raised serious concerns about the manner in which civic enforcement drives are conducted, especially when senior citizens are involved. Though the BMC maintained that the family had failed to comply within the prescribed deadline, critics have questioned whether sufficient communication and sensitivity were exercised before carrying out the action. The episode has reignited discussions around accountability, transparency and humane treatment during infrastructure-related civic operations across Mumbai.
