Mumbai Dabbawalas to Go on Six-Day Leave from March 30, Services to Remain Suspended

Mumbai: The city’s iconic dabbawalas, known for delivering home-cooked meals to office-goers with remarkable punctuality, will be on leave for six days from March 30 to April 4. These lunchbox carriers, who form a crucial part of Mumbai’s daily routine, will suspend their services starting Monday due to annual village pilgrimages and local festivals dedicated to their respective gram deities. Their absence is expected to affect thousands of working professionals who rely on their efficient delivery system to receive freshly prepared meals during busy workdays across different parts of the city.

The dabbawalas mainly hail from regions in western Maharashtra, including Maval, Mulshi, Ambegaon, Junnar, Khed, Akola, and Sangamner. Every year, they return to their native villages to participate in traditional religious celebrations and community gatherings linked to their village deities. As a result, their services are temporarily halted during this period. Subhash Talekar, president of the dabbawalas’ association, expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to customers. He also appealed to employers not to deduct salaries of workers during this leave period, considering the cultural significance of the occasion.

Subhash Talekar said the decision is part of their long-standing tradition. “Mumbai’s dabbawalas have been serving the city for over 135 years. We come from the western parts of Pune district and take this time off every year to worship our deities,” he said.

The association has urged customers not to deduct salaries for this holiday. The body appealed for understanding and corporation from its customers for this vacation. Mumbai's dabbawalas rarely take any off and are known globally for efficiency and precision. They rarely interrupt any operations  making this annual pause one of the few exceptions rooted in tradition.
