Western Railway will roll out four extra 12-car non-air-conditioned suburban local services in Mumbai from February 1, aiming to boost passenger convenience and network connectivity. With the induction of these services, the total number of suburban trains on the Western Railway network will increase from 1,406 to 1,410. Railway officials said this expansion has been made possible after the successful completion of the sixth railway line between Kandivali and Borivali. The new infrastructure has created additional operational capacity, allowing the railway administration to introduce more services without disrupting existing schedules, thereby strengthening the suburban transport system for daily commuters.

Officials further stated that the commissioning of the sixth line has enabled all Bandra Terminus-bound suburban trains to be shifted to the fifth and sixth lines between Borivali and Bandra Terminus, improving traffic regulation and operational efficiency. Of the four new services, two will run in the UP direction and two in the DOWN direction, including Bhayandar–Bandra, Bhayandar–Churchgate, and Bandra–Bhayandar services at specified times. Western Railway also noted that a few existing train timings will see minor adjustments and urged passengers to check revised schedules, as the new services are expected to reduce crowding and ensure smoother daily travel.

In other news updates about Mumbai local trains, the services on the Central line faced significant delays on Wednesday morning, January 29, disrupting the commute for thousands of passengers. A screen grab shared by a commuter from M-Indicator, the popular app for tracking local trains, BEST buses, and other public transport in Mumbai, indicated delays ranging from 20 to 30 minutes. Trains operating between Kalyan and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) were reportedly delayed by 20 to 25 minutes, causing severe inconvenience to office-goers and early morning travelers during peak hours.

Central Railway has yet to release an official statement or provide a reason for the disruption. The delays led to overcrowding on platforms and in train compartments, raising safety concerns and increasing the risk of accidents. Daily commuters, particularly working professionals, have been the worst affected, with repeated delays putting timely arrivals—and in some cases, employment—at risk. The disruption has hit private-sector employees especially hard, with some facing salary deductions or even being sent back home due to late arrivals.

A substantial number of passengers travel to Mumbai every day from Kalyan, Dombivli, Thane, and Mumbra. Morning delays have disrupted office schedules, creating a ripple effect on productivity and punctuality. Commuters are calling for urgent action to ensure reliable services, highlighting how vital Central line trains are to the functioning of Mumbai’s workforce and the daily lives of suburban residents.
