Mumbai Metro Line 4 Slab Collapse: Was MMRDA Warned About the Pillar Crack?

At least three to four people were seriously injured after a part of the under-construction pillar of the Mumbai Metro 4 line collapsed on vehicles on the busy LBS Marg near the Johnson & Johnson Garden in Mulund West, in the afternoon on Saturday, February 14.

The shocking incident just occurred just days after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) debunked a social media post about the slab crack near Mulund West on LBS Marg. MMRDA had fact-checked the X (formerly Twitter) post of the user saying "normal" and said "not structural cracks."

An X user with the user name @Netajinonsense1 had warned commuters in a post: "Don’t wait for a tragedy to cry. Report it. Repost it. Make it reach the authorities. Big Crack spotted on Metro Pillar - Mulund."

However, LokmatTimes.com has not verified whether it is the same concrete slab mentioned by the X user in a post. However, the concern arises as MMRDA had said, "The structure is safe and structurally sound, and there is no cause for concern."

In an official post on X, it said, "The structure seen in this post is a beam over Portal Pier P189 on LBS Marg, Mulund (West), where a precast beam segment connects with a cast-in-situ portion over the pier. A construction joint at this location is a normal and approved engineering practice. During concreting, foam sheets were temporarily used to seal shutter gaps and prevent leakage of cement slurry. What appeared in the photographs were remnants of this foam material, not structural cracks."

MMRDA had assured that the remnants were removed. "These remnants were identified, removed, and surface-finished by grinding during the night of 07 February 2026 (Saturday). The structure is safe and structurally sound, and there is no cause for concern," MMRDA had said.

MMRDA said that the company follows a "robust approval process" for the construction of Metro and takes 1,200 approvals before finalising the work. "In addition, all projects require statutory clearances from bodies such as the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA), and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), which are reviewed and renewed periodically," MMRDA had said in a post on X.

Replying to the user's post on cracks, MMRDA termed the information as "misguided" and "deliberate attempt to spread panic."

MMRDA Issued First Statement After Metro 4 Slab Collapse

In its post, the MMRDA said the incident occurred at around 12.15 pm near Pier P196 on the Rajiv (Milan) stretch of the Metro Line 4 project, close to the Mulund Fire Station. A part of the parapet segment fell from a height and struck a passing auto-rickshaw.

"Two individuals sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital. Their condition is being monitored and all necessary medical assistance is being extended," said MMRDA.

"The Metro project team is at the site and is working on relief operations and securing the site in close co-ordination with BMC and disaster management authorities," the statement further reads.
