Mumbai’s long-disrupted Monorail network is likely to restart operations by the end of this month, as the mandatory final safety assessment of the 19.54-kilometre corridor is currently in progress. Simultaneously, infrastructure integration work is advancing at both ends of the route — Chembur in eastern Mumbai and Arthur Road near Mahalaxmi in south Mumbai. A retired Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, appointed by the government, is carrying out a detailed inspection of the entire stretch before statutory approval for passenger services can be issued. Authorities are aiming to ensure that all systems, stations, and safety protocols are fully compliant before reopening the transit line for public use.

The Monorail service has remained suspended since September 20 last year after a series of technical glitches and repeated operational issues raised serious concerns. During the shutdown period, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority undertook a major upgrade programme, which included procuring 10 newly manufactured Indian Monorail rakes and refurbishing the older fleet. Officials also introduced communications-based train control signalling systems to improve reliability and efficiency. These improvements are expected to modernise the network and reduce the likelihood of recurring breakdowns. Authorities believe the overhaul will help restore commuter confidence in the Monorail system once services resume across the corridor.

At the Chembur section, work is progressing at the station near the MTNL junction where the Monorail connects with the Mumbai Metro Yellow Line 2B. The operational portion of Metro Line 2B currently stretches between Diamond Garden in Chembur and Mandale in Mankhurd. The integration efforts are aimed at improving multimodal transport connectivity across the eastern suburbs by enabling smoother transfers between Metro and Monorail services. Meanwhile, at the southern end near Arthur Road, construction of a pedestrian skywalk is underway to directly connect the Monorail corridor with the Jacob Circle junction. This location also links Aqua Line’s Mahalaxmi station and the nearby Mahalaxmi suburban railway station, creating a major transport interchange hub.

Transport planners and policy specialists have welcomed the revival of the Monorail but cautioned that its long-term success will depend on how effectively it integrates into Mumbai’s wider public transport ecosystem. Aditya Rane from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy stated that restarting services alone would not be enough unless the system addressed long-standing concerns such as weak connectivity, isolated stations, poor first-and-last-mile access, and long waiting times between trains. According to him, despite an investment of nearly Rs 3,000 crore, the Monorail’s daily ridership had peaked at only around 17,000 to 19,000 commuters. He added that new interchange facilities and improved pedestrian connectivity are positive steps towards making the network more commuter-friendly.
