A 25‑year‑old man from Jamtara, Jharkhand, has been arrested by Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade Police in connection with a cyber fraud case targeting a Bombay High Court judge, police said on Saturday, March 28.

The accused, identified as Mazhar Alam Israil Miyan, allegedly duped the judge of Rs 6.02 lakh using a fake customer care number and a phishing app that siphoned money through credit card reward points, the news agency IANS quoted Mumbai Police.

Police said Miyan posed as a bank or credit card customer‑care executive and guided the victim to install a fraudulent mobile application. Once the app was activated, it accessed reward points linked to the judge’s credit card and transferred the amount to accounts controlled by the accused. The fraud was detected after the victim noticed unusual transactions and lodged a complaint with the Cuffe Parade unit.

The investigation, which lasted about 10 days, led officers to trace digital footprints to Jamtara, a district known as a hub for cyber‑fraud and phishing operations in eastern India. Assisting Mumbai Police were the Jamtara Cyber Cell and the Karmatand Police, who helped locate and apprehend Miyan in his home district.

Authorities said Miyan is suspected of involvement in at least 36 similar fraud cases spread across 10 states, indicating part of a broader cybercrime network.
