The deaths of four members of the Dokadia family in Mumbai’s Paydhuni area have shocked the city. While the investigation into the case is ongoing. Preliminary discussions between forensic and medical experts have indicated that there was a delay of nearly 5 hours in providing proper medical treatment to the family members, according to the ABP Majha report.

According to officials, all four members of the family developed stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea after eating watermelon late at night after dinner. When they started developing food poisoning symptoms, the local doctor gave them first aid, which reportedly provided temporary relief. However, their condition worsened again after some time.

Despite their deteriorating health, the family members reportedly remained at home instead of being taken to the hospital immediately. They were eventually admitted to Sir JJ Hospital between 11 am and 12.45 pm, but doctors were unable to save them, reported ABP Majha.

In the medical field, the ‘golden hour’ — the first hour after symptoms appear — is considered critical for emergency treatment. Experts are now examining whether the delay in hospitalisation may have contributed to the deaths.

Preliminary findings from samples collected during the post-mortem reportedly indicated signs of severe poisoning. Police suspect the possible presence of toxic substances, including morphine-related compounds, in the consumed food. However, the final conclusion of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding whether the poisoning was caused by the watermelon or another substance is still awaited.

The J.J. Marg Police are conducting a detailed investigation into the case. “An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered, and statements of around a dozen people have been recorded so far. The exact cause of death will be known only after the toxicology report is received. Strict action will be taken against those responsible once the report is available,” police said.
