Voting in 29 municipal corporations was carried out on January 15, and the counting is underway today. In Nagpur, the BJP Shiv Sena alliance is leading with 63 seats. The Indian National Congress so far has got 17 seats. In Nagpur, Shiv Sena UBT, Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar), Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar), Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena, and Bahujan Samaj Party have not yet bagged any seats. As per data released by the Municipal Corporation, polling was limited to just 51.38%. There is a drop in voter turnout as compared to the 2017 Nagpur Municipal Elections. In the 2017 elections, voter turnout stood at 53.72%.
The counting of votes is underway, and the results are expected to be clear by 1 pm. Voting was conducted on Thursday at 3,004 polling booths across all 10 zones. There was visible voter apathy in the morning hours, with only 12 per cent turnout recorded by 11.30 am. Voter queues began forming after noon, pushing turnout to 41.09 per cent by 3.30 pm. Over the next two hours, polling rose to 51.38 per cent by 5.30 pm. Vote counting commenced at 10 am on Friday across the city’s zones.
Following the counting process, the electoral fate of candidates contesting across the 10 zones is expected to be clear by afternoon. According to Municipal Corporation figures, the city had a total of 24,83,112 voters, including 12,26,690 men and 12,56,116 women. A total of 993 candidates, representing the BJP, Congress, other parties, and independents, contested the election. The main contest appeared to be between the BJP and the Congress. However, discussions suggest that both major parties failed to draw voters to polling booths with sufficient enthusiasm, which is believed to have adversely affected them.
