Nashik: Self-Styled Godman Maheshgiri Booked for Alleged Rape Under Anti-Superstition Law in Lasalgaon

A serious case has been registered against a self-styled godman in Lasalgaon area of Nashik district. The accused, identified as Maheshgiri, has been booked under charges of rape and provisions of the anti-superstition law following allegations of sexual exploitation by a woman.

According to police, the accused had set up a base in Dharangaon (Khurd) village of Niphad taluka, allegedly on the lines of the Gangapur Math. He reportedly lured people by promising solutions to family problems and trapped them using superstition. Victims were allegedly intimidated with claims of “evil spirits” and forced to perform rituals such as bathing in a so-called sacred kund and circumambulating an Audumbar tree.

The complainant alleged that the accused initially contacted her under the pretext of collecting her birth details and gradually built communication. He later began sending obscene messages and, under the guise of performing a “divine ritual,” took her to a lodge on the Nashik-Trimbak Road, where he sexually assaulted her. He is also accused of taking objectionable photographs of the victim.

The woman further claimed that the accused exploited her in 2024 as well by instilling fear through religious symbols like a rudraksha mala and invoking divine threats.

Following the complaint lodged with office-bearers of the Anti-Superstition Eradication Committee (ANiS), action was initiated on the directions of the Superintendent of Police, and a case was registered at Lasalgaon Police Station.

The victim has expressed fears that several other women may have been targeted by the accused. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
