Another cyclone 'Yaas' to hit Bengal, Odisha between May 23-25

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of another major cyclone. The cyclone is expected to hit the east coast of Bengal on May 23. A low pressure belt has formed over the Bay of Bengal and sea surface water temperature has also risen.

Cyclone Tauktae's intensity has weakened by today but heavy rains are likely to continue with wind speeds reaching 125 kilometres per hour, the weather department said. Cyclone Tauktae has impacted the weather conditions in several parts of Northern India. Many areas like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi are likely to witness rainfall in the coming few hours.

Cyclone Toukte lashed the west coast of Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat. So far, the storm has killed 66 people and caused a major accident in the Arabian Sea when ONGC workers' boat capsized. The Navy has found the bodies of 14 people. 184 people have been rescued.

Cyclone Taukte has caused severe damage to coastal districts of Maharashtra. The roofs of the houses have been blown off. Trees have been uprooted in many places. Also, power has been cut off in many areas for the last three-four days. Meanwhile, another major cyclone is expected to hit the country in four-five days.

The cyclone will be called 'Yaas', a name was given by Oman. The sea surface temperature is above normal by 1-2 degree celsius over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal and all other oceanic and atmospheric conditions are also favourable for cyclone development. It is currently 31 degrees Celsius.

The storm may move towards Odisha and West Bengal, said Madhavan Rajivan, secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences. Currently, the storm is far from India. When this storm enters the Indian weather belt, we will include it in our weather bulletin. Currently, a low pressure belt has formed over the Bay of Bengal.

The storm is expected to hit next week, said Sunita Devi, head of IMD's cyclone team. Cyclone Tauktae in Maharashtra caused havoc. The storm has killed 18 people in Maharashtra.
As many as 28 people have been injured in the storm. Two killed and nine injured in Mumbai storm 11,000 places in the state have been damaged. 10,000 hectares of agricultural land has been affected by the storm.
