Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday advised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government to follow the Rajasthan government in implementing the EWS reservation to ensure its wide reach to the right beneficiaries.

"Central government should take a similar initiative as ours to ensure people from economically backward class benefit from it. Without this initiative, people will be running from pillar to post for different certificates to get benefit of EWS reservation," he said.

The Gehlot government recently abolished the land and buildings-related provisions which posed a hindrance to the implementation of 10 per cent reservation for the economically backward in the state. The state personnel department issued an official notification regarding the abolition of the provisions.

Now the maximum annual income of Rs 8 lakh will be the only basis to avail the benefit of this reservation.

Gehlot was speaking to the media after paying tributes to former chief minister and vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on his birth anniversary.

"Due to the terms and conditions mentioned in implementing EWS reservation, people from this category were not getting due benefits, hence I propose central government to follow the same decision so that people in India benefit out of it," he added.

The CM said that he is proud that the cabinet decided to give 14 per cent reservation to EWS 20 years back. They had also written to erstwhile prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee requesting him to amend the rules in this regard, he added.
