EPFO to Enable Instant PF Withdrawal via UPI Through New Mobile App from April
Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) members will soon be able to withdraw their provident fund (PF) money directly into their bank accounts using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). According to senior government sources, the Ministry of Labour is working on a new mobile application that will enable PF withdrawals through a secure UPI payment gateway. The app is expected to be launched in April this year.
Under the proposed system, a portion of the PF balance will remain secured, while a significant part of the eligible amount will be made available for instant withdrawal through UPI. Since EPFO does not have a banking licence, it cannot allow direct cash withdrawals from EPF accounts. However, the government aims to offer bank-like services, ensuring faster, safer and more convenient access to funds for its members.
New EPFO Mobile App: Key Features
EPFO is set to introduce a dedicated mobile application that will allow members to withdraw eligible PF amounts using UPI, check their passbook balance, and access multiple services. Currently, members use the Universal Account Number (UAN) portal and the UMANG app to avail EPFO services. While these platforms will continue to function, the new app is expected to significantly enhance service delivery and user experience. Through the upcoming app, members will be able to view their eligible PF withdrawal amount and transfer funds directly to their linked bank accounts using their UPI PIN, ensuring quick and secure transactions.
System Under Trial, Faster Claims Processing Promised
As per available information, EPFO is currently conducting trials on 100 dummy accounts to eliminate technical glitches and improve system efficiency before the full rollout. At present, PF withdrawals require claim submission, which is often a time-consuming process. However, under the auto-settlement mechanism, claims are processed within three days without human intervention. Recently, the auto-settlement limit has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh, enabling quicker access to funds for purposes such as medical emergencies, education, marriage, and housing. This facility benefits a large number of members by providing timely financial support.
The auto-settlement system was first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure immediate relief for individuals facing financial distress. With the integration of UPI and the launch of the new mobile app, EPFO aims to make PF withdrawals faster, simpler, and more user-friendly than ever before.
