Landslide in South Assam kills 20 people, Assam Chief Minister condoles the incident

In a tragic incident at least 20 people have lost their lives with several others being left injured in a landslide in southeren Assam. According to reports, the region where the landslide has hit witnessed heavy rains in the past few days. The landslide accidents happened in three different areas of Barak Valley region of the district.

Among those dead are seven people in Cachar district, seven in Hailakandi district and six in Karimganj district.  According to reports, Assam witnessed heavy rainfall in several areas since the last week that led to a pre-monsoon flood situation. At least 11 out of 33 districts in Assam were affected due to the pre-monsoon rains. The rescue operations are currently underway. 

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, expressed his condolences on his Twitter which read, "Deeply anguished at the loss of lives due to landslides triggered by incessant rain in Barak valley. I have directed Cachar, Hailakandi & Karimganj district administrations and SDRF to step up rescue, relief operations and facilitate all possible help needed to those affected."
