A mob vandalised and set the house of the Manipur state BJP Minority Morcha president Askar Ali Makakmayum's residence on fire in Thoubal district on Sunday after he backed the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. After the violence, the Ali apologised and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government to take back the law.

In a social media post, Ali asked people not to politicize the Waqf bill, which is now an Act following President Droupadi Murmu's assent. He tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and BJP Minority Morcha National President Jamal Siddiqui in the post.

"Do not do politics on Waqf Amendment Bill. We welcome Bill. We support WAB," he said. After this, a mob, suspected to be Muslims, reached Ali's residence in Lilong Haoreibi Sambrukhong in Thoubal district on Sunday evening. The group first vandalised the property before setting it ablaze.

After receiving the information about the fire, the Manipur Fire Service reached the spot to douse the fire. When the fire engine was on its way, protesters blocked the street. Protestors claimed that Ali had backed the Waqf bill and had made remarks against people who were protesting against it.  In a video posted on social media, Askar Ali apologised for his stance and urged the government to repeal the Waqf Act.

"In connection with the Waqf bill that was recently passed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, I had shared some posts on social media supporting the bill. I apologise to the entire Muslim community and Meitei Pangals. I now urge the government to repeal the bill, which has been converted into an Act, at the earliest," he said.
