Security agencies have been put on high alert in the state to counter any mischief by banned terror groups after the imposition of President's rule, officials said on Thursday. A heavy deployment of forces has been made in the Imphal valley, which has seen attacks on police by cadres of the Arambai Tenggol group. Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces will conduct a flag march in Imphal city to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order, they added.

The northeastern hill state of Manipur, plagued by violence for nearly two years and facing a constitutional crisis, was placed under President's Rule on Thursday evening. This move came shortly after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned ahead of a no-confidence motion and floor test threatened by the Congress. This marks the 11th time since 1951 that President's Rule has been imposed in the state.

N Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister of Manipur following widespread dissidence within his party. He submitted his resignation to the Governor on Sunday after meeting with the Central leadership in Delhi. Sambit Patra, the BJP's northeast in-charge, held discussions with party MLAs in Imphal, but despite early signs of a breakthrough on Tuesday, no decision was reached, sources said.
