One killed, 11 injured as bus overturns in J&K’s Ramban

Jammu, May 19 One person was killed, and eleven others were injured on Tuesday in a road accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district.

Police said a passenger bus overturned on the Gool-Sangaldan road near the Sangaldan area of the district.

The officials said the accident occurred after a bus bearing registration number JK02CU-7482 reportedly lost control and overturned on the roadside.

Soon after the incident, rescue and relief operations were launched by police, locals and emergency teams, who rushed the injured persons to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Officials said one passenger died in the accident, while several others sustained injuries, some of whom have sustained serious injuries.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident.

On May 16, a tourist couple from Gujarat was killed, and two others were injured in a road accident in the Pahalgam tourist destination in Kashmir. Officials said the accident took place when a taxi carrying tourists skidded off the road and dropped into a deep gorge.

The two tourists killed in this road accident were identified as Bawin Bhavsar, son of Mahesh Bhavsar, who was brought dead to Sub-District Hospital Pahalgam and his wife Awni Bhavsar, who succumbed to injuries after sustaining severe injuries.

The hilly districts of the union territory, including Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, have been in the news due to frequent road accidents. These accidents are attributed to bad road conditions, speeding, overloading, and road rage.

The traffic department has deployed special checking squads to check and book offenders.

Occasionally, vehicles are driven by minors or drivers without a driving licence. In cases of unauthorised driving, punishments include cancellation of registration certificates, impounding of vehicles and imprisonment of parents when minors are found driving vehicles.

Petrol pumps have been instructed not to give petrol to motorcycle riders who report without wearing crash helmets. In many cases, the traffic department has been holding road advisory lessons for drivers to inform them about the risks of rash driving.
