Tamil Nadu: Southern Railway GM Inspects Rameswaram Station Ahead of PM Modi’s Visit on April 6 (Watch Video)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, on April 6 to offer prayers on the occasion of Ram Navami. During his visit, he will also inaugurate the new Pamban Bridge, a significant infrastructure project that will enhance connectivity to Rameshwaram.
Ahead of PM Modi's visit to Rameswaram on 6th April, Southern Railway General Manager RN Singh inspected the ongoing works at the Rameswaram railway station. The new Pamban Bridge replaces the 1914-built bridge, which was closed in 2022 due to corrosion. This modern structure marks a significant engineering milestone as India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had shared updates about the project in November 2024, highlighting its importance. "Built in 1914, the old Pamban Rail Bridge connected the mainland to Rameswaram for 105 years. Decommissioned in December 2022 due to corrosion, it paved the way for the modern New Pamban Bridge, marking a new era of connectivity!" he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Spanning over 2.5 km, the new bridge has been built at a cost of ₹535 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). "Designed to handle faster trains and increased traffic, the New Pamban Bridge is not just functional but also a symbol of progress, connecting people and places with modern engineering," Vaishnaw added.
