Shah offers prayers at Kalighat Kali temple

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday offered prayers and performed rituals at the famed Kali temple in south Kolkata's Kalighat, where he offered milk to the deity and entered the sanctum santorum.

Kolkata, March 1 Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday offered prayers and performed rituals at the famed Kali temple in south Kolkata's Kalighat, where he offered milk to the deity and entered the sanctum santorum.

During a 10-minute stay at the temple, Shah performed the arti (offering light to the deity) and also and gave anjali (offerings to the god).

Shah, who visited the temple after his public rally at the Shahid Minar Maidan, was accompanied by party General Secretary in-charge of Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya and state chief Dilip Ghosh, and was welcomed by the priests who handed over a picture of the deity to the Minister.

The temple was kept open in the afternoon for Shah's visit.

A priest later said Shah performed the rituals in his own name and for the country.

Earier, at the rally, Shah began his speech by offering his obeisance to "the soil of Ma Kali".
