Pune: Daytime Electricity Users Get 80 Paise Per Unit Concession Under Solar-Linked Scheme

In the Pune Circle of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), commonly known as Mahavitaran, the total number of electricity consumers has reached 3,971,863. Out of these, 984,962 consumers have been equipped with advanced Time-of-Day (TOD) electricity meters. These modern meters allow users to benefit from concessional tariffs during specific hours. Consumers using electricity between 9 am and 5 pm receive a rebate of 80 paise per unit. Over the past seven months, from July 2025 to January 2026, residents of Pune have collectively received financial benefits amounting to Rs 8,60,72,291 under this scheme, reflecting significant savings for participating households and establishments.

The installation of TOD meters is being carried out free of cost, and Mahavitaran has appealed to consumers to cooperate with officials visiting for meter installation. The share of solar power in the electricity procured by the utility is steadily increasing. Since solar energy is generated during daytime hours and is cheaper compared to other sources, the company passes on this cost advantage to consumers in the form of an 80 paise per unit rebate. In the coming period, this concession is expected to rise to Re 1 per unit. However, to avail of this benefit, consumers must have a TOD meter installed at their premises.

Meanwhile, the Pune Rural Division has 254,353 TOD consumers out of 996,415 total consumers, receiving benefits of Rs 1,37,75,560. Chief Engineer Sunil Kakade of Mahavitaran Pune Circle has urged citizens not to believe rumors, clarifying that the new meters ensure accurate billing and do not lead to inflated electricity charges.
